Why is talent development more like popcorn than a formula?
Because not everyone “pops” at the same time.
In this edition of In the Trenches, Susan Nardi shares an important perspective on developing young athletes. Just like kernels of popcorn, athletes grow and develop at different rates. Some find success early, while others need more time, encouragement, opportunities, and the right environment before they begin to thrive.
For coaches, parents, and leaders in racquet sports, it is an important reminder not to give up on an athlete simply because they are not developing on the same timeline as someone else. Our job is to keep teaching, encouraging, and creating opportunities for young people to stay involved long enough to discover what they can become.
Sometimes the athlete who has not popped yet just needs a little more time.
